What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Types of Dry Eyes

There are two main types of dry eyes:

Aqueous tear deficiency: This type of dry eye occurs when the lacrimal glands, which produce the watery part of tears, do not produce enough tears. ATD can be caused by a number of factors, including aging, autoimmune diseases, and certain medications.
Evaporative dry eye: This type of dry eye occurs when the tears evaporate too quickly. EDE is often caused by a problem with the meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of tears. The oily layer of tears helps to prevent the tears from evaporating too quickly. EDE can also be caused by other factors, such as dry air, windy conditions, and contact lens wear.

What Are The Symptoms Of Dry Eyes?

Redness
Burning or stinging
Watering
Gritty or foreign body sensation
Contact lens discomfort or intolerance
Blurry vision or fluctuations in vision
Having to blink a lot to focus

All of these can be symptoms of dry eye disease. Yet surprisingly many people have dry eye disease without any of these symptoms.
