Causes Of Cataracts

Cataracts are typically due to age-related changes in the eyes’ natural lens. However, there are other factors that can contribute to onset or fast progression of cataracts:

• Diabetes
• Oral steroids
• Unprotected sun exposure
• Smoking
• Nutritional deficiency – some studies suggest a correlation between cataract formation and low levels of antioxidants.

While you can’t stop the onset of cataracts, there are things you can do to delay the onset or slow down the progression of cataracts:

• Wear UV blocking lenses
• Decrease or stop smoking
• Increase antioxidant consumption by eating green leafy vegetables

Treatment For Cataracts

Cataract treatment is determined based on the level of vision impairment. When cataracts progress to the point that vision can be not corrected with glasses or contact lenses, surgery may be needed.
