If artificial tears only provide temporary relief from burning, grittiness, watery eyes, or fluctuating vision, the problem may go deeper than a lack of moisture. Many cases of chronic dry eye involve inflammation or meibomian gland dysfunction, which can cause the protective oils in your tears to become thick or blocked.
At Bonney Lake Family Eye Care, we offer advanced dry eye treatments including Lumecca-I IPL and Forma-I radiofrequency. Both therapies can address factors behind evaporative dry eye, but they work differently. Choosing the right option starts with understanding what is causing your symptoms.
The meibomian glands are located along the eyelids and produce oils that form the outer layer of your tears. These oils help prevent moisture from evaporating too quickly.
When the glands become blocked or inflamed, the tear film may break down faster. This can cause chronic irritation even when your eyes appear watery.
Common signs of meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye include:
Burning, stinging, or gritty eyes
Red or irritated eyelids
Watery eyes despite feeling dry
Blurry or fluctuating vision
Contact lens discomfort
Symptoms that worsen with screen use
Frequent dependence on artificial tears
Advanced dry eye testing can help determine whether inflammation, blocked glands, tear deficiency, or a combination of problems is affecting your eyes.
Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, uses controlled pulses of light around the eyelids and surrounding skin. At our Bonney Lake Dry Eye Center, we offer Lumecca-I IPL as one option for appropriate patients.
IPL can help reduce inflammation around the eyelids and address abnormal blood vessels that may contribute to ongoing irritation. The treatment can also warm thickened oils within the meibomian glands, helping support healthier gland function.
IPL may be particularly useful when inflammation plays a significant role in dry eye symptoms, including certain cases associated with ocular rosacea or chronic eyelid inflammation.
Radiofrequency treatment works differently. Forma-I uses controlled bipolar radiofrequency energy to gently warm the eyelids and surrounding tissues.
This heat can soften thick meibomian gland oils, making it easier for the glands to function more normally. Forma-I also provides controlled warming across the treatment area and may help address inflammation associated with chronic dry eye.
Patients generally experience gradual warmth around the eyelids during treatment. A series of sessions may be recommended depending on the severity of your dry eye and how your eyes respond.
Neither treatment is automatically better for every Bonney Lake patient.
IPL may be recommended when inflammation, abnormal blood vessels, or ocular rosacea are contributing significantly to dry eye. RF may be useful when meibomian gland dysfunction and thickened gland secretions are major concerns.
Some patients may benefit from:
IPL alone
RF alone
A combination of IPL and RF
Additional gland treatments such as iLux
Prescription dry eye medications
Other therapies based on tear production and ocular surface health
The most effective treatment plan depends on your individual examination rather than simply choosing one technology over another.
Dry eye disease can have several overlapping causes. Treating every patient with the same drops or procedure may miss the real source of the problem.
At Bonney Lake Family Eye Care, we evaluate tear film stability, meibomian gland health, redness, inflammation, and other signs of ocular surface disease before recommending treatment. This allows us to determine whether Lumecca-I IPL, Forma-I RF, or another approach may provide the most appropriate relief.
